RMR test, or Resting Metabolic Rate testing, is used to determine your actual metabolic rate as a baseline to create an accurate calorie and macronutrient plan. Knowing how many calories your body burns at rest is critical in setting the calorie portion of a nutrition plan. At Live lean Rx Houston, we use RMR test data to avoid setting calories too high or too low. We want to have enough calories to build lean muscle, but not an excess where we would store as body fat.

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test Basics
At every moment of every day, your body is hard at work! The calories you burn as part of your workout routine add up and move you towards your health and fitness goals but most of your calorie expenditure comes from your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test. Your RMR is the number of calories your body requires at rest and this accounts for as much as 50% of your daily calorie expenditure! Everyone has unique factors that influence metabolism, such as age, gender, weight, body composition, activity levels, and hormone profiles. Online calculators use equations and laws of averages to guess at metabolic rates but we can measure your RMR to reveal exactly how many calories your body needs!
The Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test is ideal for:
- anyone working to lose body fat or gain muscle.
- men and women working on a body transformation.
- lifetime dieters who want to finally learn how their metabolism works and how to feed it.
- people stuck at in a weight loss plateau.
- those that prefer using data instead of estimation to take control of their nutrition and health!

- Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
We will show you exactly how many calories your body burns at rest. This is called your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). This is the minimum number of calories your body requires to carry out basic biological processes, like breathing and circulation, and to maintain lean muscle tissue. Knowing your RMR calories is critical information to create an accurate total calorie nutrition plan. - Lifestyle and Activity Calories
Our clinic-grade equipment and software will estimate the calories you burn during your daily activity based on your measured Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test and information you give us about your lifestyle. This includes the calories you burn during everyday tasks such as housework, grocery shopping, and cooking. These calories contribute significantly to the number of calories you burn each day! - Exercise Calories
We also use your RMR and information from you to estimate your exercise calories. The estimate assumes 30-minutes of moderate intensity, so this value could vary significantly depending on the length, type, and intensity of your workouts. If you want more precise information about how your body burns calories during exercise, then you can read about our VO2 Max testing service. - Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER)
Your Respiratory Exchange Ratio is a ratio between the carbon dioxide your body produces as and the oxygen your body uses. RER is expressed as a number that usually falls between .70 and 1.0. Your RER is dynamic and changes throughout the day and even during a single day, much like your blood sugar changes. Based on your RER we can show you how much energy your body is getting from carbohydrates and how much is coming from fat. We usually see very low RERs associated with keto diets and very high RERs with diets high in processed foods. - Fast vs. Slow Metabolism
Your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test report includes a comparison of your metabolic rate to the metabolism of others like you. This lets you see whether your metabolism is slower or faster than others of the similar age, height, sex, and weight. - Personalized Calorie Targets
Take the guesswork out of your calorie targets with personalized caloric goals. We’ll show you what range of calories you need to maintain, gain, or lose weight and reach your unique goals. This will also help you understand whether you’re sabotaging your progress by under fueling your body!

Resting Metabolic (RMR) FAQs
Yes. We have appointments available Tuesday through Saturday and can occasionally accommodate last minute appointment requests if you are fasting. Can’t find an appointment time online? Give us a call at 281-241-7125.
To get an accurate measurement, please abstain from food, beverages, and stimulants (like preworkout supplements and caffeine) for a minimum of 8 hours prior to your test. Water is perfectly okay during your fast, please be hydrated. Also avoid intense exercise for at least 24 hours prior to your RMR test. Eating, drinking (besides water), and exercising can all inflate your metabolism results, which can slow down progress towards your goals.
The Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test takes only 10 minutes. We’ll spend another 20 minutes going through your results with you. Plan on 30 minutes for your appointment.
How often you repeat your RMR test depends on your goals and how hard you push to achieve them. Your RMR will change as your body weight or body composition changes so you may want to retest your metabolism every 3-6 months. If you’ve already achieved your goal then you might want to check your metabolism every year or so to monitor for changes.
We accept Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards for all our services. We are also happy to send an itemized receipt for you to request reimbursement or to document your HSA/FSA card purchase.
No. You may be thinking of a VO2 Max test. For your RMR test you will breathe through a mouthpiece while resting in a comfortable recliner for about 10 minutes.
Probably not. Many gyms and supplement shops have machines to estimate body fat using bioimpedance, such as an InBody. These machines estimate your body composition and metabolism, but they are heavily influenced by levels of hydration, recent activity, and your meals. They are about as accurate as online calculators, which can be off by about 30-40 percent! If you want an accurate measurement of your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) you have to measure O2 and CO2 levels from your breath.
